Go Mo! how preparation, peak energy and teamwork paid off
Mo Farah won the 10,000 meters race at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona yesterday. He’s the first ever British win of the title. And team mate Chris Thompson came second. How?
Preparation
- Extensive training, coaching and preparation.
Mo knew that he could rely on his fabulous sprint finish when needed. At various stages of the the race he was in last place and in the middle of the pack.
Team work
He inspired his teammate, Chris Thompson, into second place. At one stage he actually turned round and beckoned him on!

And on 31 July Mo also won the 5000 meters! First time any British athelete has won both the 10000 and 5000 metres at the European championships.
Mo is also a metaphor for diversity. He came here aged nine from Somalia – was he a refugee? – and at that stage couldn’t speak a word of English.

Did you see the profile of David Bedford, ex world record holder for 10,000 metres and an organiser of the London Marathon, in the Times of 15 April 2011? David was quoted as saying that Mo may win the London marathon in 2013 on his post-Olympic debut.
