Skill transfer in practice

with 2 comments

You do it like this – your turn now

I previously wrote about the skill transfer from external consultants. And how it’s often neglected. I mentioned some approaches.  Here, in response to a request, are some real examples from my own work.

Communication champions

A national organisation with fifty locations was undergoing major change. We created communication champions in each location. These volunteers were trained to disseminate and adapt the national messages. This role provided communication experience, recognition and exposure to head office.

Change co-coordinators

We brought together a group of blue collar operators to identify good practices. The volunteers, selected on the basis of their experience and credibility, widened their knowledge of headquarters and the business as a whole.

Special projects

I reviewed performance at a large human resources group and agreed an action plan. Internal staff implemented the resulting projects, such as simplifying HR policies and improving recruitment processes. The projects were matched to development needs and capabilities. One project leader delivered improvements, developed her experience and used the case study to complete her CIPD qualification.

Informal workshops

We identified stakeholder engagement as a critical area.  I designed two half day workshops with some 30 staff. We discussed issues, problems and solutions and shared knowledge. We then agreed new ways of working.

Mentoring

I mentor clients, concentrating on practical skills. I worked with one newly appointed CEO to balance intuitive and analytical ways of organisational decisions. With another, I worked to develop a new more collaborative style of chairing meetings.

Creating opportunities to practice

I led a new Unit, as an interim manager. A young team member was keen to progress. I created a series of mini projects. For example: putting together presentation materials, carrying out a process review and benchmarking research. This work was reviewed, supported and discussed. They were subsequently promoted twice.

  1. [...] Informal teamwork is best. In recent assignments, I have created communication champions, change co-ordinators, special projects and informal workshops to share experience, as well as mentoring and creating opportunities to practice. (Practical examples of each are here.) [...]

  2. [...] Put time aside to transfer skills and be pro-active. [...]
